Thinking about starting a school store?
Hop on the Bus with us - We'll
make it simple!
School Depot®
makes it very easy for you to set up your own school store. It's as easy as
ABC...
|
A. |
LOCATION
Rolling Cart or Table - A rolling cart or table that can be rolled
into a well-trafficked area, i.e. a cafeteria and rolled into a closet or room that can be
locked while store is closed.
Small Room - A small room i.e. a bookroom is ideal. The top half
of the door remains open and the bottom half is closed and has a counter where
transactions are made.
|
|
B. |
DAYS AND HOURS OF OPERATION
Determine how many days of the week and what hours the school store will open and
close. It is ideal to open fifteen to thirty minutes before school opens.
|
|
C. |
VOLUNTEERS
Recruit volunteers - Prepare a form where a volunteer can sign up for the day(s) of
the week they wish to work. Usually one or two volunteers per shift is sufficient. (School
Depot® can prepare a volunteer form signup for you.)
|
|
D. |
ASSIGN / TRAIN VOLUNTEERS
Assign and train volunteers - A simple training manual with procedures, hours of
operation, list of volunteer schedule, volunteer responsibilities, i.e. daily transaction
report, counting and recording receipts, daily or weekly inventory count, etc.
|
|
E. |
SET SELLING PRICE
Determine the selling price for each item you will carry in the school store. Try
to keep the selling price the same all year. This eliminates the need to republish the
price list.
|
|
F. |
ADVERTISE! ADVERTISE! ADVERTISE!
Pre-Announcement - Send home with each student a pre-announcement
to inform parents about the school store. This also creates anticipation of what is to
come.
Newsletter - Put information in school newsletter including
opening day, hours of operation, etc.
Grand Opening Announcement - Send home a notice one or two days
before the Grand Opening. The notice should have the opening date and time, days and hours
of operation, and a price list of all items you will have available in the school store.
Local Newsletter - Publish similar information about the Grand
Opening and the school store in the local community newsletter.
|
|
G. |
GRAND OPENING
Make it fun for the students and staff by inviting parents and having an official
ribbon cutting ceremony conducted by the principal.
|
|
H. |
MARKETING
Announcing a "Special of the Week" or some other idea to motivate
students to utilize this service will draw traffic and make volunteers feel their valuable
time is well spent. |
If you're not ready to start a
school store, vending machines are a
great way to keep students from running out of pencils, pens, and paper!
